How to use the Every Door Direct Mail System (A Marketing Cheat Code)

Mitchell TeboMarch 1, 20254:45

Mitchell walks through the USPS Every Door Direct Mail website: searching a zip code, reading route stats, and picking routes that total close to 5,000 homes.

Key takeaways

  • Go to eddm.usps.com and search the zip code, city, or town you are targeting to see the mailing routes drawn on the map.
  • Hovering over a route shows its residential and business counts, total doors, an age breakdown, and the average household income for that route.
  • Select and unselect routes until the total lands close to 5,000 pieces, so you are not paying postage on cards that will never be printed.
  • Mitchell pays little attention to income targeting because everyone is a consumer, unless the card is built around luxury businesses.
  • Once routes are chosen, open the table view and copy the route IDs to send along with your final file so the cards go to those routes.

Hey, what's up guys? A lot of you have been asking for this, so I'm going to go over the US Postal Services Every Door Direct Mail website and exactly how to use it. It's actually pretty simple and luckily with my all-inclusive service, I take care of most of it. So, most of you guys who are going to use my all-inclusive service will only need the very basics on this website. The rest of you might need a little bit more in-depth, but for now, this is just the basics.

I want to get this out there for you guys. Okay, so we're here on Google. The first thing we're going to do is go to eddm.usps.com.

Okay, so now we're on the USPS EDDM website. Um you're going to see that there's four important aspects here. We have the search bar. We have the statistics. We have the map itself and we have the order summary, okay?

So first, search bar is pretty simple. All you're going to do is type in the zip code or city or town that you're targeting. So, I'm going to say 03801, which is the zip code that I personally do for my cards. Okay, so now we're looking at that actual zip code. We pulled it up.

It's Portsmouth, New Hampshire. And you these pink lines you can see are the actual mailing routes. These are the routes that you can select for your Every Door Direct Mail mailings to go to. So, in this case, your 9 by 12s. So, you can actually select these.

And if you hover over them, you'll see in the top where it says refine search, look right here. You'll see that it actually shows the statistics. So, it'll show that there's 519 residential houses. There's 26 businesses. It shows the total number of number of doors it goes to.

It shows the percentage of people who are 25 to 34 and you can adjust that age. Um shows the size and it also shows the average income for people in that specific route. And lastly, the cost is just the cost of postage, which is about 22 cents per card. So, 545 doors * 22 cents per card is about $121. So, that doesn't exactly matter if you're going with my all-inclusive program anyway cuz the postage is included in the price, so you don't have to do the math on that anyway.

But yeah, all you would do is select the routes that you actually want to target. Three routes selected now, and you'll see that there's 1,900 total mail pieces, so 1,900 doors that I've selected with these three routes. Again, the cost doesn't really matter if you're going with my all-inclusive program. And what you can actually do is you can look at the table as well. And so this table shows all those same routes, those pink lines that we saw, and it's just a list of them.

So you can actually see the numbers all lined up next to each other. So if you just want to select a bunch of random routes, let's just go Okay, so really what we're trying to do is get close to 5,000 because what you're telling people is this is going 5,000 doors. So you want to Typically, I would use the map, but I'm just showing you that the table is another option, and you can still see that order summary's right here, the total mail pieces I have selected for all of these different And really just play around with it until you get nearly 5,000 pieces because you don't want to pay postage for this extra 667 cards. That's a couple hundred dollars in postage that you'd be paying for no reason cuz I'm only going to be printing 5,000 cards. So you just keep selecting routes, unselecting routes until you get close to 5,000.

Okay, so I just selected a bunch of routes and I just got really close to 5,000. They're areas that I I'd want to target. I looked at all their stats. Some people like to target by higher income, that way you can tell those businesses that you're targeting income levels of 70,000 or higher. I personally don't pay too much attention to that because unless you're targeting luxury businesses, doesn't make much of a difference for them because everybody's a consumer despite their income level.

Once you have the targets selected, you just go to table and you see what you have selected, and these are the important numbers that you're going to give me when it comes time to fulfill your order. So when you send me your final file, these numbers right here are the routes that I'm going to ask you for because these are the routes that I need you to tell me to send the cards to. So, I'll send them to the post office, fill out the paperwork so the post office knows it should go to these routes: 03801C002, So, you're just going to copy and paste those routes and send them alongside your email with your final file. And that's that's really it. That's all you guys really need to know for the Every Door Direct Mail website.

Just make sure it's close to 5,000. The extra 13 cards, what's that going to come out to? Seven What's a couple dollars? It'll come out to a couple extra dollars. I cover that cost because it's it's a couple extra dollars.

No matter what, with my all-inclusive option, it's four grand. You can see that in the order. So, even if it's like 5,050 cards, I just cover the cost of the extra 50 in postage. It's fine. Just make sure it's close.

If it's really far off, we're going to have a conversation about possibly choosing a different route that gets us a little bit closer. But, yeah. That's about it. Hope that helps.
