Easy $12,000/month With The 9x12 Postcard Method (25 Pro Tips)

Mitchell TeboApril 5, 202512:02

Mitchell shares 25 quick tips for growing a 9x12 postcard business, from picking a market and collecting payment fast to following up and time blocking.

Key takeaways

  • Focus prospecting on businesses already paying for newspaper, magazine, billboard or postcard ads, since they already believe in print advertising.
  • Send a Stripe invoice the moment a prospect says yes, then offer other payment options, instead of chasing money weeks later.
  • Always send clients a proof and get written approval before printing so mistakes like a wrong phone number are caught early.
  • If a card is running late, tell advertisers honestly and ask who they know who might join, since nobody minds a delay when you communicate.
  • Follow up with prospects who went quiet using a short line like "Have you had the chance to consider?" because most simply forgot.

This video will make you thousands of dollars if you let it, but you got to believe and you got to keep things simple. And if you don't already know what the 9x12 method is, you're in the wrong place. Just go to the video in the top right corner of this screen and I'll blow your mind. I promise. And for those who already do know, let's get started.

All right, tip number one. The best time to start was a month ago, and the next best time to start is right now. So, promise yourself to reach out to one business today. I mean, what's the worst thing that could happen? I don't care how far along you are.

Reach out to one business. Just see what happens. Worst case, they don't respond. Tip number two, don't try to reinvent the wheel. I've set up a community with 2500 people now, and the course literally holds your hand through selling out an entire card.

And out of the 2500 people that have joined, the most successful people are the ones that have copied it to a tea. They literally just copied my framework. They copied my scripts. They copy everything. And they've been the most successful, and they're making thousands of dollars because of it.

So, don't try to get all fancy. Don't try to reinvent the wheel. Just join my group. Copy it to a tea. There's a small nominal fee, but if you don't like the group within 24 hours, literally just message me.

I'll pay you your money back and you can leave and we can be happy. So, if you're interested in joining that group, link is in the description. Tip number three, simplify your workflow. We shouldn't optimize everything that we do, but anything we do on a daily basis, every single day, we should definitely try to keep optimal. For example, scripts.

If you're sending scripts, the same exact scripts every day on email, you should probably set up keyboard shortcuts on your Mac. That way you can type a few letters and then the entire script will paste in. Also, stop task switching. Focus on one task. You can peel one apple and then another apple way faster than peeling two apples at the same time.

Imagine trying to peel two apples at the same time. It's inefficient. All right? So, do one thing at a time and focus on it. Tip number four, focus on prospects that are already spending money on advertising.

So, look at your weekly newspaper. Look at all the prospects that are already advertising in there. We are way better than that. we can easily sell them on what we're offering. So, definitely collect their contact info.

Magazines, billboards, anybody who's actually paying for print advertising already, even people that are sending out postcards themselves, they're probably spending thousands of dollars when they could just spend 500 bucks for the same exact amount of exposure. So, focus on those. Tip number five, give clients multiple payment options just to reduce friction because you don't want your payment options to be the reason that they say no. So, give them a casual option like Venmo. Give them a more professional option like Stripe where they can pay with a business credit card if they like to do that.

Or for the oldfashioned people, accept checks or cash. And honestly, checks and cash are king because then you don't pay fees. Tip number six, use a CRM. And don't tell anybody I said this, but the 9x12 method CRM is coming soon. It's built by 9x12ers for 9x12s.

So stay tuned for that. You'll be able to organize using scheduled tasks. There's a sales pipeline that you can actually drag and drop people from stage to stage. Obviously, you can import your contacts directly from your spreadsheets. There's a card management feature where you can actually manage your cards and see your cards and who you've sold to.

And so, like I said, don't tell anybody about that, but definitely use a CRM to stay organized or I mean, use a spreadsheet and that'll do. I I started out with that. Now, I use the 9x12 method CRM, but honestly, if you're trying to stay organized and you hate clutter, just go with the CRM. Tip number seven, choose your market wisely. Don't shoot yourself in the foot by going for a market that has like 2,000 people in it.

I mean, how are you going to even mail 5,000 cards at that point? But choose a population of at least 15,000, preferably more. And obviously a population where there's a large business density, that's going to be best. So then you have the most number of businesses to reach out to. I feel like that's kind of obvious.

And if you're choosing a large city of like a million people, you're not going to be telling prospects, hey, I'm sending 5,000 postcards to 5,000 people in Boston because that that's going to be mean nothing to them. What you're going to do is you're going to choose a neighborhood or a specific zip code in Boston that might be 50,000 people and then it's going to be a lot more enticing and more specific. Tip number eight, track your deductions. Whether you have an LLC, a DBA, it doesn't matter. You're a business owner.

You're a sole proprietor. So track your deductions. You're only taxed on your business profits. So any business, true business expense, you can actually deduct. So you don't get taxed on that.

For example, if you bought sample packs from me, that is a deduction. That's a business expense. If you did a lot of traveling, you can actually I think you can deduct about 70 cents per mile in travel just as a business expense. And you can actually write that off so you pay less in taxes cuz who likes paying taxes? Tip number nine, don't waste two days designing your ads at the end of the month.

Please just hire a designer or at worst use templates to design your ads so you can be more efficient. You shouldn't be spending a ton of time on this. And you can get designers super cheap. We actually have an in-house designer. We're cheap and he's actually incredible and great customer service, unlimited revisions, but this is not a plug.

So yeah, just don't waste too much time with the ad design. Tip number 10, always send your clients a proof before printing. That way they can approve it and tell you that it is good to go in writing. That way there's no misunderstandings once they receive the card in the mail and say, "Hey, you actually put in my phone number wrong." That's on them cuz they approved it.

So make sure you get written approval. Tip number 11, we're in a blue ocean right now. So start to scale immediately or at least as quickly as you possibly can. Bring on an admin to handle your bookkeeping and all your day-to-day client follow-up stuff like that. Hire somebody to do all your cold outreach for you.

Hire somebody to collect your leads for you. I offer that as a service, but this is not a plug. Just delegate everything so that you have more time for actually closing sales, going out in person, and actually truly collecting money. Tip number 12, think about customer lifetime value. They are not just this one $500 sale.

So, don't burn bridges. You want incredible customer service cuz you can sell them more than one time. If you have great customer service and you make their life easy and they have great results, then they're going to want to renew and their lifetime value just doubled because now you got them for two months or three months or six months or forever. So, focus on lifetime value. You can also increase this by upselling them.

You can offer other services like web design, social media marketing, and even if you don't actually know how to do those services yourself, just say yes if they ask you to do those services because you can always outsource. And if you need help connecting with somebody that you want to outsource it to, just hit me up and I'll help you find somebody because we have a ton of people in the group that I'm sure can help. Tip number 13, the best contact info will come from businesses that are on Google Maps. This means that they have an active Google business profile, which means they're way more likely to be in business versus just a business with a website. Okay?

So, find businesses on Google Maps and then go to their website and look for the Facebook icon on their website and that's where you'll find all their contact info. Once you find that Facebook icon, you are set. Tip number 14, always try to send your emails between 7 am and noon time. And if you can't do that, send them after 5:00 PM and you'll see the best response rates around those times. Tip number 15, smile while you do cold calls.

Positive translates clearly through your voice. Tip number 16, always bring a sample postcard or multiple when you're going door todoor cuz there is no words that can sell as well as the 9x12 postcard itself. It basically sells itself. So bring those along with you and you could grab those in the classroom in my group or you could, I don't know, print some off yourself if you could find a way to print 9 by 12. But yeah, bring those.

Tip number 17, post in Facebook groups. I make sales every single time I post in a Facebook group. Some groups will be better than others, but you need to find those groups, any local groups, and post in them. Not necessarily the business Facebook groups, but the actual community ones. And some will have certain rules that you can't post advertisements.

You just got to look into that. But post in as many Facebook groups as you can. And I have exact scripts in our group under the prospecting section in the course that'll tell you exactly what I usually post in the Facebook groups. Tip number 18, collect payments immediately. Do not give them a chance to change their mind.

Don't give them a second. So, here's what I usually do. As soon as they say yes if this is over email, I will send them a Stripe invoice right away. I don't ask how they would like to pay. I send the invoice right away.

And then I follow that up with an email that says, "Okay, I just sent you an invoice to officially claim your spot. Please let me know if there's another way you'd prefer to pay. So, you're still giving them options, but you already put the invoice right in front of them, so it's an easy payment. And I make it clear that they are officially claiming their spot. They have to pay to claim their spot.

We are not going to chase money a month down the line cuz most of the time those people will be long gone. They ghosted you. So, always collect payments. If you're scared, collect at least 50%. But seriously, just collect 100%.

I've never had a problem with that. Tip number 19, emphasize that we are a community mailer. We are not junk mail. The community actually enjoys receiving this because they are respected community businesses. And the other part is we're not junk mail.

People aren't going to throw us away because there's tons of deals on the card. People are going to at least throw it in the drunk drawer or maybe magnetize it to their fridge at best. So the brand is in front of these people for potentially months. Tip number 20. Nobody is going to ask you for a refund if you're a little bit late.

Just communicate with them. Okay? So, if you tell them you're going to get it out by mid to late July and you're getting into late July and you don't think you're going to have it filled up, just tell them that it's taking you a little bit more time and actually leverage this. Turn a lemon into an apple, if that makes any sense. Actually ask them for referrals.

Say, "Hey, I'm having trouble filling this up. Who do you guys know that would like to join?" And make it like a team thing. Nobody's going to ask you for a refund. Nobody really cares when it goes out as long as it does go out and that you're transparent with them and that they know you're not running away with their money.

Tip number 21, use a Chrome extension to track who actually opened your emails. Yes, those exist. Look them up and that way you can see who opened your emails and you know who you should really follow up with. Tip number 22, always follow up with people who stopped responding to you. In most cases, they're actually not ghosting you.

They just simply forgot about you. The money is in the follow-up. You'd be shocked how many sales I've made just by following up with people who I thought were ghosting me. All you say is a quick little, "Hey, just curious. Have you had the chance to consider?"

That's it. Leave it at that. And you'll be surprised how many people are like, "Oh yeah, yeah, I'm in." Tip number 23, set up time blocks. Set up blocks of time during your day where you actually focus on one specific task.

Set up a time of day where you're specifically going to send out cold emails, where you're specifically going to work on ad design if you're doing that. Set up time blocks. That way, you're not task switching constantly because task switching, like I said, it's like trying to peel two apples at once. It's just inefficient. Do one thing at a time and actually plan it in advance the night before.

Okay? And again, the task feature on the new 9x12 method CRM that's coming soon will have the ability to do that and you can set up recurring tasks. Tip number 24, have a great website or no website at all. Don't have a crappy website. How many times have you looked up a company, saw a horrible website, and immediately lost your trust in them?

Yes, you are no different. You are no special. If you have a crappy website, same thing will happen to you. So, either have no website or have a great website. And I actually partnered with somebody who can actually set up a fantastic website for you for free.

The build is free. All you have to do is pay for hosting, which you're going to have to pay for hosting anyway, no matter who you use, whether you build with Canva or whatever. So, it's a free setup. He builds a website for you. It's beautiful.

It's custom. You can check the link in the description for that if you're interested. But seriously, you don't need a website, but if you're going to have one, have a good one. And tip number 25, and this is a big one, stop being afraid that this might actually work out. I know a lot of you are just sitting on the sidelines cuz you're scared that a prospect might actually say yes and then you have no idea what to do after that and you you're just so uncertain and I understand.

But here's the thing. If you're part of my group, we eradicate all of that. There's 2500 people there willing to help. Post in the group and they will help you on the fly. You have unlimited access to me.

You have unlimited access to as much information you could need. And if you're making sales over email, you don't have to respond right away. So just start. There's nothing to be afraid of. Don't you want some money?

So, if you're not in the group yet, join the group. Small nominal fee, but like I said, if you don't like it, within 24 hours, message me. I'll send you your money back. I'm rooting for you guys. And if you look behind me, the waves are kind of pumping.

So, I'm going to go surf. Peace.
