The Average Side Hustle Pays $200/month. This One Pays $5000

Mitchell TeboSeptember 11, 202612:09

Mitchell compares the average side hustle's pay with the 9x12 postcard business and breaks down the real numbers, the pitch, and the outreach work involved.

Key takeaways

  • Survey data shows the median side hustle pays about $200 a month for roughly 13 extra hours a week, and 65 percent report burnout.
  • A $500 slot on a card mailed to 5,000 homes costs a business 10 cents per home, far less than the per-lead cost of Google Ads.
  • Mitchell's pitch: he cannot guarantee customers, but 5,000 local homes will see the business for a dime each with no competitors on the card.
  • Facebook groups and Messenger are the top outreach channel in the community, and Sharina made six sales in three days using only Facebook groups.
  • Most sales come on the second, third or fourth message, so keep following up instead of quitting after one round of outreach.

The median side hustle in America pays $200 a month. This one makes $5,000 when you do it right. And you can make it happen whether you have a full-time job, children, or both. Bank rate surveyed thousands of American adults. And the median person with a side hustle is literally bringing in 200 bucks a month.

In 2024, it was actually $250. So now that number is going down. So it's getting even worse for side hustlers, not better. But here's the part that made me actually put down my phone when I read it. The average side hustler in this country is putting in 13 extra hours a week of work into their side hustle.

And when you do that math over a full year, it comes out to 676 hours. That's literally 17 extra 40hour worked weeks for your side hustle. So you're working four extra months of full-time work on top of the job that you already have. And the median person is literally walking away with about $2,400 a year for the entire year. So that works out to about $3.

50 an hour that most people are making from their side hustles. You would literally make more money picking up a second shift at a gas station or something. And then on top of that, 65% of those people doing this reported that they got burnt out. And of course they do. They're working four extra months a year for gas station money.

Maybe you can buy a hot dog. And I'm not saying any of this to make fun of anybody because I was one of those people. And you might be, too. That's why I made this video. I tried a bunch of stuff like I tried the drop shipping thing.

I looked at affiliate marketing. I tried day trading. And I was part of that statistic. So I get it. But I want to show you what absolutely changed things for me.

and it started out just as a side hustle alongside my real estate career. I can sell one of these postcards and I make about $5,000 in profit off of it. And I'm going to walk you through the business model right now. And for those of you who are more ambitious, of course you can sell more than one of these per month, 100%. And for me, by my third month, I was selling at a rate of three cards per month.

You can do the math. But first, let's talk about one card. We will talk about the real numbers, the real work that it takes, and the parts that genuinely suck because there are parts that suck, just like any business or side hustle. But at least with this one, you're making more than $200 a month. And now, let me be clear about something before we go any further.

This business is very, very simple. But it is not easy. If you want easy, this is not for you. In fact, side hustles are not for you. And entrepreneurship as a whole is probably not for you if you want easy.

I'm sorry. That's just the truth. And now, if you're still watching this after I said that, I can only assume you're okay with some work. So, you'll do just fine. Now, this business requires you to talk to people, and it can be virtually.

Don't worry, I'll get into that. And it also requires you to keep following up with people when they don't answer you. But don't worry, most of the time they appreciate it. I'll get into that as well. But if you're willing to do that, the money is honestly kind of ridiculous compared to the effort that's put in.

So here's what the business model actually is. You take a large 9 by12in postcard. It's the biggest thing that anybody will ever receive in their mailbox. It's literally impossible to miss. It literally wraps around the rest of their mail.

And on this postcard, you have around 16 ad slots, unless you sell some larger slots like I did. But that's eight ad slots on the front and back. And you sell each one of these slots to a local business in your town for $500. So that's a roofer in one slot, an HVAC company in another slot, a landscaper, a dentist, a pizza place, a car wash, and so on. And you only allow one business per industry.

That's what makes you special. So nobody on the card is competing with anybody else on the card. They can truly own the neighborhood. And then once you sell all 16 slots, you send that card to a printer. The printing company prints it and then does the mailing to 5,000 homes in your town through a program that the United States Postal Service offers, which is called EDDDM.

It stands for every door direct mail. And EDDDM is the whole reason that this works because with EDDDM, you don't need a mailing list. You don't need the 5,000 addresses or the names of the people living there. You literally just go to the post office website. You select the mailing routes that you want the card to be delivered at, and the post office delivers your cards to literally every single house on those mailing routes.

And for reference, we can handle all of the printing and fulfillment for you at print.n912method.com. We do the printing, the packaging, and the distribution. We'll even put in the EDDDM order for you all through USPS.

So, you never need to actually lay your hands on the 5,000 cards. Now, of course, if you just wanted us to print the cards and send them to you and you handle them, that's totally fine as well. But the best part about this business is that you actually collect the money upfront from the advertisers before you have to pay for the printing. So, you basically need no cash to start this business. And now, let me give you the actual math, which is the fun stuff, obviously, the money stuff.

You have 16 slots on the card. And most people, including myself, charge $500 per slot. So 16 * $500 is $8,000 in revenue just from one card. And then the cost to print this card, bundle it, and mail it to 5,000 homes in town is going to cost you about $3,000 all in with everything included if you go with us. And I dare you to try to find somebody cheaper who will do it all for you.

But you can try. So you take your $8,000 in revenue and you subtract $3,000 in cost and you're left with around $5,000 in profit. That simple on one postcard. And like I said, you collect all the money upfront from the businesses before you print anything. So you're never out of pocket.

The only real risk in starting this business is your time. The businesses pay you and then you pay the printer with their money and you get to keep the difference in the middle. If you compare that to almost every other side hustle you've been pitched in the last 2 years, you'll see why this one is unmatched. Zero upfront cost. And now I'm getting ahead of myself because I know what you're thinking.

You're thinking, "Okay, that sounds great for me, but why on earth would a local business pay $500 for a little box on a postcard?" And that's a fair question and it's the right question to ask me. So, let me answer it for you with math instead of hype. $500 divided by 5,000 homes is 10 cents per home. So that business is reaching a household in your town on a large 9x12 in postcard for 10 cents.

And now you compare that to what that same business is currently paying to get a customer. If they're a roofer running Google ads right now, the average cost for a single lead is somewhere around $228. That's one phone call that they're paying for, not one customer. And it might even be a wrong number. HVAC companies are paying somewhere in the $80 to $150 range for one lead.

And it's getting worse for them, not better, because everybody piled into Google over the last 3 years and bid the prices up. And I'm not going to sit here and promise a business owner that my postcard is going to make their phone ring off the hook because I can't promise that and neither can you. But what I do tell them is the truth. I say, "I can't guarantee you customers, but I can guarantee you that 5,000 homes in this neighborhood local are going to see your business and it's costing you literally 10 cents a house. If you were to do this on your own, it would cost you like over a dollar per house.

And none of your competitors are on the card." And then I just shut up and I let them do their own math. That's literally the whole pitch. So you're not like a salesperson. You're actually a community connector.

you're just a person in town who is bringing together local businesses so that they can split the cost of marketing that none of them could really afford on their own. And when you actually frame it that way and you truly believe it, it stops feeling like you're selling them something. Okay, so real quick before I keep going, I put together a 9x12 postcard template just like this one so that you don't have to design the whole layout from scratch. So then it'll be way easier for you to just paste in the ads as you sell out the card. So it'll save you a ton of time.

So if you want that template and you like saving time, just comment the word template down below and I'll send it right over to you for free. No strings attached. And if you like this idea so far, take half a second and hit the like button because it lets me know that I should keep making free content like this. And as a thank you, here's a photograph of a raccoon holding a slice of toast with 9x12 method burned right into it. You're welcome.

But anyways, let's talk about the actual work because I promise you I'd be straight with you. The work is outreach. That's the whole job. You have to contact local businesses and ask them if they want to be on the card. So, it's not glamorous.

It's pretty simple, but there's six different ways that you can do it. and you get to pick whichever one matches your personality, which I think is the most underrated thing about this business model. I'm personally an introvert, so I've done everything over email and some Facebook Messenger. I pull business emails off of Google Maps using my scraper called Lead Scout, or you can just do it manually. And then I send a simple short first email that doesn't really try to sell anything immediately.

My subject line is literally just the word question. That's it. Because the whole point is not to give somebody a reason not to open it. But email is only one way to reach out. And honestly, it's not even the best way for most people.

The number one channel in our community by a mile based on the real results from real members is Facebook groups and also Facebook Messenger. So you just join the local Facebook groups in your town that have your town name in it and you just post about the card and then you also just message a bunch of the businesses in your town. Again, a very simple pitch. And I want to give you a couple real examples. So this isn't just theory.

There's a woman in our community named Shireena. She's a stay-at-home mom. She homeschools three boys, so she's very busy. And she made six sales in three days using nothing but Facebook groups. and she was making those sales before her kids even woke up in the morning.

She made zero cold calls, sent zero emails. She just used Facebook groups. And then there's a member named Michelle who studied this thing for months, got scared, kept putting off the business, but then finally went all in and got literally seven yeses in 48 hours. That's $3,500 in 2 days. And then there's a guy named Michael who sold 10 slots in a single day while working a full-time job.

10 slots at $500 each is a $5,000 day. Now, obviously that's crazy. You're not always going to have $5,000 days, but this is just proof of concept. And then there's a member named Fernando who had a roofer buy one entire side of his card. That's eight slots.

So, he only had to sell half of his card after that. And now you might be asking in your head, who are these members? Members of what? And that's a great question. Thanks for asking.

I put together a community where there's now 2900 other 91ers, all learning this business model around the country, doing it all around the country, talking about their wins, answering each other's questions, etc. And in that community, we have live group calls every single week. There's a full step-by-step course that literally brings you from the very start of even planning your first card all the way through to selling out and finishing your card. And you get access to some software and a bunch of other valuable resources to save you time and to give you confidence to sell out a card as fast as possible. But most importantly, you have the ability to post anything to the group, whether it's a question, a concern you have, or you're just bragging about a win you had.

So, if you're the kind of person who likes having the entire model laid out in front of you just so you can follow it while still having the safety net of a community where you can ask questions when you're lost, then the 9x12 method school community is the place for you. So, if you're interested in joining us in the community, the link is in the description below. And as a bonus for joining, you'll also get to put your pin on the map at our local spotlight so that you can now tell advertisers you're part of this big group of people doing this around the country, which is absolutely massive for creating trust. Okay, so now back to the business model. This is the single most important thing I can tell you in the entire video.

Do not ignore the follow-up. The sale rarely happens on the first message that you send them. It happens on the second, the third, or the fourth message. And most people in this business fail for one reason. It's because they sent out one round of messages to a ton of people.

Not many people replied within a day, and then they just decided the business model doesn't work. They never followed up. That's not the business model not working. That's you quitting on touch number one, not knowing that the fortune is in the follow-up. Business owners that we're working with are extremely busy and sometimes they just forget things.

So, we need to keep reaching out to them. And in most cases, they're actually grateful we do so because they were truly interested in joining. But that's why the first touch doesn't cut it. They just put it off to the side sometimes. And I also want to be honest about the hard part about this business.

Card number one is the hardest thing you'll do in this business. It's a quite the grind because you have no card to show anybody. You have no testimonials. You have to sell something that only exists in your head technically. Of course, you can create templates and things like that to help you, but every single card after that is dramatically easier because now you have the real thing that you can hold up and say, "Here, this is what I do."

Not to mention, some advertisers will choose to stay with you on a monthly basis, which is where things get really cool because as you gain more and more long-term clients, your card will already naturally be filled, so you'll have less slots to sell every month. So, this leaves more time for you to scale to a second card or just golf or something. I don't know. What will you do? Comment down below.

Are you a scaler or you a golfer? And so, here's where I'll leave it. The median side hustle in this country pays $200 a month for four extra months of your life every single year. This one pays about $5,000 if done right for one car with $0 upfront and you can do the whole thing from your phone at your kitchen table or from the golf course for those golfers. It's not passive.

It's not automatic and it's not super easy, but the hours actually pay well. And I'll give you my own anecdotal experience on time commitment, but this is not a promise because it'll all depend on the resources and the strategy you use. All the more reason to join the community. But I sold out my first card in about a month with about an hour work per day. Real focused work.

I sold out two cards my second month with about two hours per day of real solid focused work. And then I sold out three cards my third month with about three hours per day of real work. That's literally $15,000 in profit that I made with about 3 hours per day. And I know that sounds ridiculous, but that's why it's not a promise. I don't know, maybe I'm Superman or something.

Just kidding. But there's so many member wins in our community that validate that this works. And you'll see them all over the channel in the form of interviews. And also when you click on the link to join the school community, you'll see a ton of member wins and reviews there. And on that note, if you'd like to join the community, again, the link is in the description.

But if you're not ready to join, that's totally fine. Just watch this video here, which is actually an hour-long master class that walks you through the entire business model from start to finish, all the way from selecting your routes to designing your final card. And whether you join us or not, I hope you absolutely smash it out of the park. I love you. Peace.
