Day 1 Attempting the Viral 9x12 Postcard Side Hustle From My Bedroom

Mitchell TeboJanuary 21, 202621:32

Day 1 of Mitchell selling a 9x12 postcard in a new city: picking Sanford, Maine, setting up Canva, email accounts, a landing page, Stripe, and first emails.

Key takeaways

  • Pick a town of about 10,000 to 50,000 residents with an above-average income; Sanford, Maine has roughly 21,000 people.
  • Stick to the gray urban areas on Google Maps, since big cities already have heavy foot traffic and tiny towns have too few businesses.
  • Set up the 9x12 Canva template from the community freebies before your first sale, and never move the indicia, which printing and mailing depend on.
  • Create about three Gmail accounts so you stay under 30 emails per account per day and keep your messages out of spam.
  • He claimed an Our Local Spotlight landing page to look legitimate, set up Stripe payment links, then sent his first five emails by BCC.

This is day one of selling out a 9x12 inch postcard in a brand new city and hopefully making $5,000 [music] in profit within one month. Let's see how we do. And if you guys don't know what the 9x12 method is, all we're doing is reaching out to local businesses in a specific town and [music] asking them if they want to join a large 9x12 in postcard that's getting sent out to 5,000 doors in [music] the town. Each business pays us $500 for a slot to go on the postcard. They give us their ad and they've claimed [music] their slot.

So that gives us $8,000 in revenue just for getting businesses to come together on this postcard. They get cheap advertising because they're splitting the cost with non-competing businesses. Then once we get 16 businesses [music] to join the card, we have $8,000 in our pocket. We go to the printer. We pay them $3,000 to print, mail, and distribute the cards to US Postal Service.

US Postal Service then distributes the cards to the routes that we select. We don't need 5,000 addresses. We use the Every Door Direct mail system by the US Postal Service, so we don't have to worry about that. And for those of you who have never heard of the 9x12 method before, there's a full tutorial in the top right corner. You click that, it'll bring you through step by step exactly what to [music] do.

And then you can come back to this series. Now, I've been teaching it for about a year. We have 2,800 people in our community, people doing it all around the country. But I've never shown you my day-to-day actual day in the life videos. [music] So, that's what I'm going to do now so that you can see exactly how it's done, exactly how casual it can be, and how you can make $5,000 in your first month literally just by copying my actions [music] in this series.

I'm going to show you everything all the way from choosing your location. I'm going to show you my cold calls. I'm going to send emails. I'm [music] going to show you every single conversation that I have with advertisers so that you can see that there's really not much to be worried about. A lot of people are sitting on the sidelines because of uncertainty.

[music] Well, I want to show you what it's like in the trenches. So once you watch this series, you're going to know what it's like when you start. So I hope you're ready to get granular. This is day one. Let's go over the agenda.

So first, I'm going to have to choose a territory. I'm probably going to choose a place nearby just in case I want to go door to door and sell some cards. And then we're going to set up the Canva templates. That way I can just slap the ads on when I actually make [music] a sale. I also have a bunch of sample cards like this.

That way I actually have them to hand out doortodoor. The cards basically sell themselves cuz they're like a unicorn. Nobody sees something like this in their mailbox. After I get the template set up, I'm going to set up my email infrastructure. I'm probably going to make a few different email accounts.

That way I can spread out my sending. That way I don't end up going to spam. And I'll explain more about that later. And then I'm going to get a landing page set up on ourspotlight.com.

It's basically a directory of 9x12ers all around the country who all have landing pages just to show that you're part of something bigger. So I'm going to get a landing page on there. That way I can send it to potential advertisers and they'll see that I'm legit. Then I'm quickly going to set up my Stripe account, get some payment links built, make sure I have my invoices ready to go. And Stripe is just a free payment processing tool where you can actually collect payments, send invoices.

You just pay them like a transaction fee of 2.9%. It's pretty standard. You could always collect checks or cash. It's up to you and how you run your business.

But I like to use Stripe. And then for the time-consuming work, I'm going to be scraping leads from Google Maps. That way I can collect all their contact information and have valid emails to be sending [music] out to. And you guys will see this is extremely timeconuming, but I'm going to show you a really fast way I found to do it. Then I'm going to import all those leads into my CRM.

I'm going to set up the CRM the way I like it. so I'm ready to go [music] when I have leads come in. I can actually organize them properly. And then I'm going to set up like an action plan for myself. [music] Just like a daily outreach goal, how many outreaches I want to make on each platform.

That way I can hold myself accountable and actually get this done quickly. Because if it's not planned, it's not going to happen. [music] And guys, this is a full setup day. So, if you want the checklist so that you can get set up step by step and know that you haven't missed anything before you get started, just comment checklist and I will send you the interactive checklist that you can follow on your own in order to actually get yourself set up as well. So, again, just comment checklist and I'll send that free interactive checklist right on over to you.

And like I said, we have a community of over 2,800 other 9x12ers doing this all over the country. So, if you [music] want to join that community, there's a course in there. I have all the templates in there, scripts, live group calls, an AI ad design generator, and the ability to comment and post to other 9 by12vers and ask questions. [music] Join that community. The link's in the description.

And now, let's get to selecting my territory where I'm actually going to target [music] advertisers. Okay, here we are in Google Maps. I'm going to show you exactly how I go about selecting an area to target for a 9x12 campaign. There's a few key points, but I really just wouldn't overthink it. So, first of all, you don't have to do this locally, but it does help when you can say that you're a local.

you could at least say you're in the region and you could also potentially go sell doortodoor if you wanted to actually go into the businesses. So, I'm going to choose a place that's in southern Maine and I recommend sticking to the gray. So, if we look at Google Maps, you can see the gray areas are more urban areas, higher [music] dense population. And typically, you'd want to look for a population that's about 10 to 50,000 [music] residents. Okay?

You don't want to be targeting all of New York City because what I've seen or let's say all of Boston [music] because first of all that's a massive area with sending out 5,000 postcards. If we go to a a business in Boston to say, "Hey, we're sending out 5,000 postcards." They don't care. They already get so much foot traffic. They don't necessarily need that kind of marketing.

Okay? So, I like to stick [music] to the medium to smallsized cities. So, I've already had my eye on a place called Sanford. As you can see, it is a gray area surrounded by more rural areas. These are [music] people that are still going to be open to marketing.

They don't have unlimited foot traffic, but it's also a dense enough community where there's going to be enough businesses for me to personally reach out to cuz this is a numbers game. I do want to be able to reach out to a lot of people. If you do this in a town with a thousand people, you're going to have like five businesses to reach out to. That's not really [music] going to get a card sold out when you have to sell out 16 businesses. So, I'm going to do a little research on Sanford.

Okay, so this is really how I go about it. I'm going to first look [music] up the the city, what it's really about. Okay, the population is about 21,000 22,000. That is [music] perfect. Situated on the Mousum River.

I like this already. Another thing that I like to look at is average income because if the average income is higher on average, the businesses are going to have a higher budget and that just makes a sale a little bit easier. So, let's just look at the average income. Can't always trust. The average income is around 70,000 which is very high compared to the national average.

So I like this already. Yeah, because the average salary in the US I think is around 60,000. [music] So it's already higher than the average salary. That's really all we need and we've already got a proper population. It's slightly local.

So I think we're going to see what we can do with Sanford Maine. It's really that simple. You choose [music] a place, there's businesses, you reach out to them. You don't really have to overthink it. There's no magical location where just every business wants to throw their money at you.

So don't overthink [music] it. Just stick to the principles. 10 to 50,000 people is a sweet spot. And a decently high average income is also helpful. Okay, so now that I've chosen a location, I'm going to set up my Canva template of the 9x12 in postcard.

That way when I make a sale, I can quickly just throw the business's ad up [music] there. It's like my own personal tracker of who's already joined. So I'm going to set up that template. So, here I am on school.com/912 method where I actually have the templates in the community for free.

So, I'm going to go to the classroom. I'm going to go to freebies [music] and then going to go to proper size templates and that's where I'm going to grab the 9x12 full card template because that's what I'm going to be using. And then I'm just going to click on view template. And once it's loaded up, I'll [music] meet you in there. Okay.

So, here I am. I just grabbed the template and this is just filler stuff. So, I'm going to delete this. Make sure it's ready to go. Don't mess with the indesia at all because [music] that is important for when it comes time to print and mail these cards.

Just going to get rid of that. And really quickly, I'm just going to change the [music] date because it is going to be our February or let's see, today is January 5th. We're going to shoot for a midFebruary card. So, February. And I don't like that font.

So, I'm just going to get rid of that al together. Okay. So, I switched up the font. That's what we're going with. and we're going to do it in Sanford because that's the location [music] we've chosen.

So, our template's ready to go. It is ready for when we put want to put an ad in. And I have a double ad here. I'm going to sell as many double ads as I possibly can because that just makes it easier. My prices are going to be $500 for a normal slot, $900 for a double ad.

So, it's going to be a little bit cheaper if they go. Now that we got the template set up, I'm going to go back to the freebies in the [music] community and I'm going to grab the sample pictures for prospecting. I'm just going to download some of them. that way I have them [music] for when I want to send pictures to potential customers. So, I just downloaded a few.

Okay. And the other thing I like to do is get the scripts ready. They're in the community. I go to the classroom and the course and I grab the scripts and I put them into my notes. That [music] way, it's a whole lot quicker to just then it's much easier to copy and paste from my notes into the emails when I mass send emails.

So, I just like to make it easy for myself and just have it ready in my notes. I've got the template set up. I've got the script set up. We're getting closer to being ready to actually start prospecting. Next, I'm going to set up some email addresses.

That way, I can mass send some emails. Okay, so I don't think I need to show you how to set up email accounts. Just go on Gmail, set up like three accounts. That way, you can just spread out the sending because if you send more than 30 emails per day, per account, it's going to start going to spam. So, you want to create multiple email accounts so you can send a bunch of emails per day.

Okay. So, now the next step, I'm going to go to ourspotlight.com and I'm going to get myself a landing page on here. That way I actually come across as part of something bigger. So as you can see there's a map here of all the partners, all the 9 by12ers around the country [music] doing this and it shows each person has a landing page that's actually custom to their location.

[music] Shows the zip code is going to in a map. So I want one of these for myself. That way if advertisers say are you like even legit, I can send them to my landing page and obviously it looks legit like you're part of this entire country worth of people doing this. So, I'm going to put in an application to [music] join this landing page by clicking on partner application. And I'm just going to quickly fill that out.

Okay, so I successfully submitted the application. Once the landing page is built, I'll show you it really quickly and then we'll move on from there. Okay, so now that I applied as a partner, let's see if my landing page is up there. Let's go. And this is going to help me just seem more legitimate.

Yeah, it looks like we're there. So, we're on the map. Click on it. Just make sure my landing page is all good. It's going to make me seem more legitimate to prospects when I reach out to them.

I can send them the link to this. That way, I seem like I'm part of something bigger. So, let's see. Inquire. Now, it's got my info.

It's even got a blog section with blog posts to potentially [music] attract organic traffic to me. So, glad that's set up. Now that that's set up, we're going to go through something pretty timeconuming. I'm going to collect email addresses for me to actually start reaching out to people. Email addresses, phone numbers, all their contact information.

That way I have everything I need up front rather than just collecting info and then calling somebody and then collecting info. It's better to just collect it all, get it all in one place in the CRM and ready [music] to go. So, we're going to work on that next. And I'm going to show you how I do it the fastest possible way while still being manual because when you do it manually, you get proper contact information. If you just buy something [music] online, it's usually like decades old and a lot of those emails are bunk and then you end up going to spam.

So, [music] okay. So, now we're going to go collect a bunch of contact info for businesses. So, there's actually a really easy template in our community in the freebies section that I'm going to grab. This just makes it easier to like organize your leads in a organized manner. You don't have to put together a spreadsheet yourself.

So, just go to the freebie section and we're going to use template. [music] And there, it's already built for us. And then I'm going to show you how to collect leads extremely fast. So, first let's just change it to like Sanford contacts. So, what we're going to do is we're going to use Google Maps and we're going to look up industry in town.

So, for example, [music] landscaper in Sanford. Let's try that. And then what we're going to do is we're going to go open in maps. And then right here, these are all of the Google businesses in the Sanford location. If I zoom out a bit, it's going to show more of the screen.

and whatever is showing on here on the map itself will show here. Okay, so you can really easy choose your radius just by zooming in or zooming out. [music] Okay, so all we're going to do is choose, you know, a decent radius about, you know, 10 to 15 miles outside of town. We'll go with 10 miles outside of town. Any businesses in this radius are valid businesses to reach out to.

So, we're just going to go uh website by website. So, you just click on the website. And now when we get to the website, there's only a few places that the contact info will most likely be. So we're looking for their email address and their phone number most importantly. So there's only a few places it could possibly be.

But I jumped ahead actually. The first thing I do is I click on the business. I quickly copy their name and go over to the spreadsheet. This is all about being organized. And I come back here.

If I care about their industry, which you should keep track, I copy it, paste it back over. Then we're going to go to their website. So we click here on the website. We're going to copy the website URL just in case we ever need it again. Paste [music] it in there.

See how that template's coming in handy. Now, there's three places that the contact info will really be. Okay. [music] In the header, in the footer, or in the contact us page, sometimes on the about page. Don't look anywhere else on the entire website because this is a numbers game.

You just want to collect [music] fast. Move on to the next. If you can't find it, just move on. Move on. There's so many businesses you want to collect quickly.

Okay? Okay. So, if it's not in the header, footer, contact or about, just skip ahead. So, I'm going to go really fast. Let's see.

There's nothing in the header in the footer. Look at that. Already got all their contact info. Got [music] the phone number. Copy it.

Paste it. Email. Copy it. Paste it. And they have their Facebook here, which I like to copy as well.

I put their Facebook profile right there just in case we want to Facebook message them. [music] Now, here is a pro tip. Let's go to another one now and I'll show you another place that you can find their contact info. Okay, so sometimes instead of looking in the header, footer, everywhere, if you see a Facebook icon, all of their contact info will almost always be there. So you click on the Facebook icon and right away, boom, you can see their email and you can see their phone number, you got all their contact info, their address, everything is right there.

So if you see the Facebook icon, literally don't look anywhere else. Just click on that Facebook icon. you got all of their info. So, I'm going to go ahead and collect a bunch of businesses contact info. I'm probably going to start with 50 just so I have enough for a day or a couple days worth of sending emails.

And it's going to take a little bit, but I'm not going to show you me working on this the entire time. [music] So, I'll jump ahead when I got all these emails built. I'll show you how I put them in the CRM. Okay. So, slight change of plans.

While I was started to build that list, I really quickly realized that there's not actually a lot of businesses in Sanford. Surprisingly, despite the fact that it is a gray area, which you would think isn't more urban, more businessy area, it was just a lot of houses. So, all the businesses I was collecting were like outside of Sanford anyway. So, I'm going to switch it up. I'm not going to do Sanford anymore.

I'm actually going to do Portland, Maine. And this is a slightly larger city. It's like 60,000. So, it's just above the threshold where I recommend, but it's still considered a small city. It's a really small city compared to others.

And the average income is over 100,000. So, it's going to be pretty fantastic. I'm hoping there's going to be a whole lot more businesses here and yeah, I'm going to start to collect some leads and then I will show you what I do with them. All right, glad that's over with. Guys, you're going to see really quickly that that is the most tedious part of the business.

That's why I offer it as a service actually. If you check out the link in the description if you guys want me to do it for you, I've gotten pretty fast at it. So, now that I have all these leads, I'm going to import them into the 9 by12 method CRM, which is literally a CRM that's built specifically for the 9 by12 method. I mean, we have the pipeline. We're going to be able to import our contacts in like 2 seconds.

We have the custom card templates. We can build the card out and actually put their ads on the card whenever we make sales. We can even send invoices straight from it. So, this is 9 by12 method CRM.com.

All we're going to do to import the contacts in about 30 seconds. We're going to go file. Going to go ex download download. Download as a CSV file. I've got that downloaded.

Now I'm going [music] to go to contacts. Import contacts. Watch how quick this is, guys. Upload spreadsheet. I'm just going to drag the file in here.

And because I'm using the template from our school community, it's already going to work with the CRM. Obviously, they work [music] together. I'm going to select the sheet, which is this one. I'm going to upload all 50 contacts. I'm just going to press yes for this.

And then I can tag them all. For example, if I plan on doing multiple [music] different towns, I can put a specific tag on them. Like I'll say these are Portland. Just in case one day I want to import contacts from like Worcester, Massachusetts. then I can have them tagged individually so that later on when you see what the CRM can do, you'll be able to just search for the specific town and all those contacts will pop up.

So, I like to preemptively add that tag. And there we are. Took literally like not even 10 seconds and we have all of our contacts in there imported in. And that's the 9x12 method CRM. There's so much you can do with it.

I would basically move them along this pipeline as I'm making sales. And that's what I'm going to show you as I make some sales on this journey with you guys. So, next I'm actually going to build a daily action plan for myself. That way, I can actually hold myself accountable to actually prospecting a certain amount of times per day. Because if it's not planned, if it's not written down, it's not going to happen consistently.

You can only rely on motivation for so long. Then, you have to rely on discipline and you got to rely on the plan. So, I'm going to create a plan for myself. I might honestly just use one of the action plans that I've given to one of my coaching clients because I could think of one off the top of my head that would fit my personal preferences perfectly. So, I'm going to go find that action plan and let's see what I can show you guys.

Okay, so I found the action calendar that I built that I really resonated with. And as you can see, I'm showing you week one. I don't want to show you the entire plan because my coaching clients pay for this, okay? And I'm going to be following it and you guys can follow this series and you can kind of get an idea of the kind of volume that you should be putting out in order to match my energy. But this is how we're starting out.

You can see week one, we're starting slow. We I just created three new email accounts, so I can't be sending too many emails at a time per day or I'm going to start going to spam. I need to slowly warm them up over time. So, a lot more of my time will be potentially over the phone and going in person, although Portland is a little far away from me. But now, guys, this is where people fail right here.

They get all of the prep work done, every little bit of prep, and then they stop. They freeze up. They think to themselves, well, now I got to actually commit. Now I actually have to reach out to people. But what if I don't sell out the card?

What if I have to refund everybody? What if? What if? What if? This is where people freeze and then they never get started.

You spend all this time getting set up. It's important that you commit before you get cold feet. So here's what we're going to do, and this is exactly what you should do if you're starting along with me. We're going to send five emails right now to our list. We got our setup done.

We are not going to wait until tomorrow. It's literally 3:45 in the afternoon right now. Not a fantastic time to send emails, especially on a Thursday because it's a numbers game anyway and it's going to give us momentum. We're not going to lose that momentum and we're going to continue it on tomorrow. So, all we're going to do is copy and paste the script from the school community, put it into an email, choose five of our contacts, send off that email.

And I'm going to do it right now so that you can see me and hold me accountable. All right. So, I have the script copied and pasted from our school community. simply copied the script from the community, pasting it in there with a simple email signature saying talk soon. Okay.

All I'm going to do is I'm [music] going to take five of my contacts. I'm going to copy their emails in here and I'm going to paste it into the BCC field [music] field. So, I'm going to do five today. All right. And then I'm going to move them to a new pipeline.

So, I'm going to edit this contact. I'm going to put them in as first contact because I contacted this person once. So that person is now [music] in my pipeline. See? So I'm going to do this for now five emails total.

And then I'm going to speed it up. Okay. So I have all five businesses in there. It's the first day of getting set up with the 9x12 method. And we're going to send our first emails because we don't hesitate.

We push forward and we move with uncertainty. If we're uncertain, we move anyway because that's what winners do. And this business is so simple. They're going to potentially respond to my email. And then I have hours to figure out how I'm going to respond next.

[music] Just reach out in the community. Ask people, "Hey, how should I respond to this?" It's that simple. Just get started. Press send with me.

Let's go. Let's send it. Boom. Day one is complete. I'm going to follow my action plan tomorrow.

Guys, make sure you subscribe so that you can follow along with this journey with me. And hopefully, I hope you're taking action alongside me on this one. And again, comment checklist if you want that step-by-step checklist to help you get set up for the 9x12 business. It's simple. It's free.

I'll send it over to you. Just comment checklist. And if you're excited to see us make some sales pretty soon and hopefully make $5,000 profit by the end of this month, then leave a like and I'll see you on the next one. Peace.
