How Regular People Sell Out an $8,000 EDDM Postcard (7 Habits)

Chapters

Seven habits pulled from hundreds of member wins on how to sell out a 9x12 postcard: start now, go warm first, post in Facebook groups, and keep following up.

Key takeaways

  • The fastest wins came from members who started right away, like JP, who joined in the morning, posted in a Facebook group, and sold his first ad that afternoon.
  • Start with people who already know you: Sherena sold a spot after two text messages, and Celeste's first buyer was a realtor friend she asked for feedback.
  • Local Facebook groups were the most repeated channel in the wins feed, and Michelle closed seven yeses in 48 hours after posting in 10 to 15 groups.
  • When one channel stalls, switch to another: Travis had zero sales experience, walked into 10 businesses, and sold eight spots in person.
  • Follow up again and again, because busy owners who go quiet often come back, like the four businesses that signed with Michael four months after his first email.

I went through every post in the wins section of our 9 x 12 method school community and there's literally hundreds of them. Every single first sale, every sold out card, and every I almost quit but I didn't post. And I was looking for one thing. What do people who actually win have in common? Because here's the thing, they don't have the same background at all.

One guy builds vehicles in a factory for a living. One woman is a stay at home mom homeschooling three little boys. Another guy works a full-time job as an appointment setter. Some of them are introverts like me and some of them will walk into any building and talk to anybody. So it's not about personality and it's not talent, it's behavior.

After reading through hundreds of posts, I found seven behaviors that show up over and over again in our winners. And if you copy these seven things, you're basically copying the people who already won, okay? And now let me be clear before we get into it. This business is simple, but it's not easy. If you want easy, this business probably isn't for you.

I'll be honest with you. But if you're willing to do a simple few things consistently, stick around because this video could save you months. And so if you're brand new here, my name is Mitchell Tibo and I teach something called the 9 x 12 method. It's honestly the simplest business on the planet and that's exactly why I love it. You take a large 9 x 12 inch postcard, which is the biggest thing that anybody gets in their mailbox, and you sell ad slots on it to local businesses.

You only let one business per industry on the card, so nobody's competing with each other. There's 16 slots on the card, eight on each side, and you charge around $500 per slot. So when the card is full, you've collected $8,000 in your pocket. Then after you've collected the $8,000, it costs you about $3,000 to print the cards, prep them, and mail them to 5,000 homes through a US postal service program called Every Door Direct Mail. So after everything, you walk away with right around $5,000 in profit from one of these cards.

And the best part is, you collect all the money from the businesses before you print anything. So the amount of money you need up front to start this business is literally zero. And you're not a salesperson in this, you're a community connector just helping local businesses split the cost of marketing. That's why I love it. Okay, so let's get into the seven things that I saw that winners do that nobody else does.

And number one is that they started before they felt ready. This one jumped off the page because the fastest wins almost always came from people who literally just started immediately. One member named JP in our group posted his whole timeline. He bought our course, he's joined our community at 9:50 a.m.

in the morning. He posted in a local Facebook group at 11:30 a.m. and sold his first ad at 2:25 that same afternoon. Same exact day.

And another member named Sandy sold her first spot less than an hour after she signed up for the community. Just using the scripts. And this before she had even gone through the full course. She just went straight to the scripts. And Peter joined on a Sunday.

He sent four emails to HVAC companies on Monday and one of them wrote back in two minutes saying, "Yes, I want to sign up." And now if you compare that to the other side of the wins feed, because there's plenty of people that are honest in there, too, about their procrastination. One member spent almost a year perfecting his designs, his website, his ads, and he got zero results because he never actually went and talked to a business. And another member named Terrell wrote that he had been procrastinating out of fear. And that he sat there with his finger hovering over the call button for 10 straight minutes.

Which I'm sure a lot of us can resonate with because cold calling can be tough. But the good news is that he finally hit the button. And that's when he made an update post where he announced his first win because he sold his first slot. So here's the lesson. Your website doesn't sell the card.

Your logo doesn't sell the card. Conversations sell the card. Okay, now thing number two that helps people win. They went to people who already knew them first. Before Sherena ever posted in the Facebook group, she reached out to a list of business owners that she had already met personally.

And after sending two text messages, she already had an ad spot sold to somebody she already knew. It doesn't have to be a best friend. Just people that you know. And Celeste sent her pitch to a few friends just to get feedback on it. And a realtor friend ended up buying her very first spot.

And someone named Anthony gave his first spot to his mom and dad's business, which made the card feel more real. And then his first paid sale came very soon after that from a garage door company. And Liza didn't even make a sale on her first day, but she got four referrals and a promised introduction to a handyman. And she said the reason that she got all of this was simple. She just asked for it.

If you don't ask, you don't get. And your warm network is the easiest yes you'll ever get. And those first one or two yeses give you the confidence and the social proof, now that you have somebody who joined, to go after everybody else. Now, pattern number three that I've noticed in our winners is that they posted in local Facebook groups. This was the single most repeated channel in our entire wins feed, and I'm not joking.

Michelle started posting in 10 to 15 community Facebook groups around 11:00 on a Monday night, and by the next morning she had about 30 responses from local businesses. She closed seven yeses in 48 hours. Ashley sold six spots with Facebook groups, and she called them a goldmine. Edward posted one simple question in his local group, just asking people which businesses that they love, and he got more than 100 business suggestions in just 24 hours, which is basically a lead list that his neighbors built for him. And on her second card, and I know I talk about her a lot, but Sherena added photos of her actual mailers to her posts, and she even added a family photo just to be more personal, and she ended up talking to more than 25 businesses who reached out to her personally.

People love the idea of community. So, here's what you do. Post in your local business groups, but also post in your neighborhood groups, because business owners are scrolling there, too. And change your wording up a little bit each time so that Facebook doesn't throttle you and you don't get banned from the communities. And by the way, if you want the exact Facebook group post and the text scripts that my members are using, just comment the word scripts down below and I'll send them over to you for free.

And if you gotten a solid nugget out of this video so far, take a second and hit the like button down below because it genuinely helps the channel more than you think, and it tells me that you want more free content like this. And as a thank you, here's a picture of a raccoon holding a tiny postcard smoking a cigar. Pretty cool, huh? But anyways, moving on. Item number four that I see in winners in the 9 by 12 method, when one channel stalled, they switched channels.

They didn't hesitate. They didn't just grind the dead channel for weeks. Fernando's emails weren't working very well, and he hated cold calling so much that he actually hired an accountability coach to get on FaceTime with him and watch him make his calls so that he couldn't get out of it. And as a result, he ended up filling up his entire 5,000 card mailer with cold calls. And a roofer bought a whole side of the card.

That's the kind of luck that only comes with action. And Sarah made 20 calls in one morning, got seven business owners on the phone, and three of them said yes. That's a crazy close rate. And her opener was basically, "Hey, I'll be super quick. I'm working on a giant postcard that goes to 5,000 local homes.

We're featuring one local business per industry, and I want to see if you'd be interested in grabbing your category before it's gone." It's simple as that. That's the simplicity I teach in the community. And Travis in our community builds vehicles in a factory and said he had zero sales experience whatsoever, like most people in our community. And he walked into 10 businesses, and he sold eight spots.

Michelle went out for 2 hours one afternoon, walked into 12 businesses, and got five maybes plus a sale. That's five leads and a sale that paid the same exact day. And here's my favorite one. Sharina does not like talking on the phone. She did all of her sales over text and Facebook.

But one guy wanted her to call him. So, she did it anyways, despite not liking to talk on the phone. The call literally lasted about 1 minute, and he bought a regular ad plus her large premium ad for his wife's business. So, that's three ads all together. So, if something isn't working, don't overthink it.

Just switch the channel. And now, item number five that winners are doing in our community, they follow up. And then they follow up again, and then they follow up again. The follow up is where the money lives, and I talk about this all the time. For example, Robert emailed 20 HVAC companies on a Friday, got no response, so he followed up with them on Saturday, and then got a $450 spot paid for just because he followed up.

And then Brett emailed a lead, got a reply, and then followed up four more times over the next couple of weeks with no response back whatsoever. Then out of the blue, that business owner emailed him asking for a mock up of a double ad. He closed a deal on his premium spot because he followed up. And Michael shared that four businesses that he had already emailed 4 months earlier randomly reached back out, and they all signed up with him just because he stayed on top of things. So, here's the thing that you need to understand.

Business owners are very busy running their local businesses. So when they don't respond, it doesn't necessarily mean no. It just means that they got pulled into something else or they just don't have time for you right now. It's important to understand that. Just keep following up.

And now item number six that winners are doing is they go after the big fish. Some of the fastest card fills in the entire feed came from one business buying a huge chunk of the card. Like Fernando's Roofer who bought an entire side of the card, which is eight spots in one conversation. And Kevin had an in-person meeting with a real estate office and they bought his whole front side of his card as well. And JP sold out his entire front cover in three days.

So instead of only chasing one spot at a time, it's good to reach out to a few of the bigger well-known businesses in your town. Bonus points if they already do direct mail and ask if they'd want a whole side of your card. And you'd be surprised how many of them say yes. And then item number seven that I see winners doing is they don't stop during the slow patch. Every single person who posted a sold out card went through a quiet stretch, whether it was in the beginning, in the middle, or the end.

Everybody went through one. Joshua works full-time and he went two whole weeks without selling a single spot. And he wasn't sure that he was going to make his card out that month. But then he made one more Facebook post and closed five spaces just from that one post. So his wisdom was basically that you're just one more action away from success.

And it's true. Luck comes when you take action. And Bob sold three quarters of his card in three weeks and then really struggled on the last few spots. But he kept grinding and eventually got it sold out. And those extra few weeks really are where the most profit is cuz he was already break even for a long time, but he really wanted to squeeze out that profit.

So it was worth it. And Adam said he almost gave up two or three times before selling out his card. And even Sharina said that she probably could have sold out her first card in three weeks or less, but she took long breaks around the holidays. So here's the reality. The card, the business model, does not fail whatsoever.

It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when you fill up the card as long as you don't stop. And that's your decision. And to be real with you, card number one is kind of like paying tuition. It's the hardest one that you'll ever do because you have no pre-existing relationships. But everything after that gets easier because you have certain advertisers that will want to stay on your card every single month, so it'll get stickier and stickier.

So, let me run back through all seven items real quick, and make sure you write them down. Start before you feel ready. Go to your warm network first. Post in local Facebook groups. Switch channels when one of them stalls.

Follow up, then follow up again, then follow up again. Go after the big fish, and don't stop during any slow patch whatsoever. That's it. That is the entire equation. Nobody in those hundreds of posts had some secret trick to winning.

They just did the boring stuff consistently and stuck to those seven pillars. Okay, so if you want my help doing this step-by-step with a bunch of other people who are on the same path, thousands of people, I do have a community with over 2,900 people in it, and the link to join is in the description. It's actually where all of these wins and piece of advice were actually posted. And it also has the full step-by-step 9 by 12 method blueprint, which will walk you through from start to completing a full card. And it'll take out the guesswork completely.

So, it'll save you a ridiculous amount of time and stress. And as they say, time is money, baby. And who likes being stressed? And if you're not ready to join, that's totally fine. Just go watch this video here next where I interviewed Jason, who's an introvert just like me, who sold out his first card and has a cold calling script that's unlike anything I've ever heard.

And business owners don't even realize it's a sales call when he talks to them. So, you're going to learn a ton from it. As always, I'm rooting for you. Peace.
