USPS is Raising Postage Prices (Actually a Gift for Direct Mail Sellers)
Mitchell TeboJuly 6, 20265:40
Why the USPS postage increase barely dents 9x12 postcard margins, and two scripts that turn the rate hike into a real deadline for closing advertisers.
Key takeaways
- EDDM postage rose from 24.7 to 26 cents a piece, which adds only about $65 to a 5,000-piece drop, so your margin barely moves.
- The deadline close uses the real postage date: tell fence sitters you are ordering before the increase and need their slot locked in by Friday.
- The co-op reframe explains that solo mailers absorb every postage hike alone, while a shared card splits it 16 ways, so the gap widens each year.
- USPS has already projected more increases for 2027, 2028, and 2029, so the shared card pitch only gets stronger over time.
- Mitchell's homework is to open your pipeline, find businesses that were interested but went quiet, and send them the first deadline message that day.

Everybody in the direct-mail world is freaking out right now because US Postal Service is raising postage prices on July 12th, 2026. And honestly, I think everybody's overthinking it. Because this rate hike that everybody's whining about actually gives you leverage to go make a bunch of quicker sales these next couple of weeks. Okay, so here's the deal. On July 12th, US Postal Service will raise postage rates once again.
Every Door Direct Mail postage, which we use to mail most of these marketing mailers, will go up from 24.7 cents apiece up to 26 cents apiece. That's a 5.3% bump. And the Forever stamp will go from 78 cents up to 82 cents.
The whole increase averages out to about a 4.8% increase across the board. And that's the lose everybody's losing their minds over. And before you panic, let me put that into real numbers for you because this part actually matters. On a 5,000 piece drop, which is a standard 9 by 12 postcard that you send to 5,000 doors, that increase is going to cost you an extra $65.
65 bucks. That's it. So this is not a my costs are exploding kind of situation. Don't walk into a sales conversation acting like the sky is falling because it isn't. Your margin is barely moving.
Okay, now keep that number in your back pocket because we'll come back to why it matters in a second. But if you're new here, real quick, here's what we do here at this channel. We take a giant 9 by 12 inch postcard, the biggest thing anybody gets in their mailbox, and we sell ad slots on it to local businesses. About 16 slots on the card, we usually charge about 500 bucks each. We print it and then we mail it to around 5,000 homes in town using the US Postal Service Every Door Direct Mail system.
And all of those businesses split the cost of the mailer, which is why it's valuable for them. And 16 slots at $500 [snorts] is $8,000 coming into your pocket. print and postage usually runs you around $3,000. So your out of pocket is $3,000 and you make about $5,000 in profit per card. And the best part is that you collect all of their payments up front so you have the $8,000 ready to go before you pay for a single thing.
So there's zero upfront capital needed in order to start this business. Okay, but back to the postage thing. Here's the mindset flip that I want you to think about. The postage increase is not a cost problem, it's a closing tool for you. It just might be the best one you get all a and here's why.
A price hike with a hard date staple to it gives you three things you'd normally have to fake. So, I'm going to give you the three angles to leverage and I'm going to give you the exact scripts for each of those angles. So, you can copy them and use them today. Angle number one is called the deadline close. And let's be real, most scarcity in sales is fake.
Like when businesses say, "Act now, limited time." Everybody's heard that a million times and nobody believes it anymore. Let's be real. But this deadline is real. It's stamped by the United States government.
Big Daddy Uncle Sam is telling us the date is July 12th. So, use it. And here's what you literally say to a prospect that's been sitting on the sidelines for a while. "Hey, USPS raises postage on July 12th. I'm shooting to order the next card before that.
So, then everybody on the card gets a lower rate. I've got a couple slots left and I just need yours locked in by Friday if you want that lower rate." And that's it. That's an actual reason for them to move now instead of a made-up reason and people actually feel the difference. You're just being transparent with them.
And angle number two is called the co-op reframe. Here's the thing about a postage increase. When a business mails its own postcards by itself, it eats 100% of that rising postage. Plus, it's own design, its own print, all of it is totally on their dime. But when 16 businesses split the cost of one 9 by 12 card, they split that cost 16 ways.
So, follow the logic with me here. Every single year postage prices go up. That is a fact. And every year that they go up, the gap between mailing solo and sharing a card gets even wider. Mailing alone keeps getting way more expensive.
Being on the shared card stays cheap because the increase is getting diluted over 16 different businesses. So, the pitch to a local business becomes this. "Mailing your own postcards just got more expensive again and it's going to keep going up the next year and the year after that. But a slot on this card is how you stay in the mailbox without eating that whole bill yourself." Okay, you see what I'm getting at with that script?
Rising postage isn't a reason to skip the card. It's actually a reason to claim a spot on our 9 by 12 card. You're not selling them an ad anymore. You're actually selling them the smart way to handle a cost that's only moving up and up and up every single year. And I'm not making up that one direction part.
USPS has already estimated more increases for 2027, 2028, and 2029. They literally raise rates basically every year now. So, this reframe will never expire for you. In fact, it gets stronger every single year. Okay, and real quick, the hardest part isn't the first message that you're going to send to them.
It's knowing what to say on the follow-up and the second follow-up. So, I went ahead and wrote out the whole sequence for you built around this July 12th deadline. It comes with the first message, the 24-hour follow-up, the 48-hour follow-up, all of it. And this sequence is designed specifically to close some sales for you this week for the postage increase. So, if you want the whole sequence, just comment deadline down below and I'll send it over to you totally free.
Just comment deadline below. And while you're down there, hit the like button because it means a lot. So, here's exactly what you should do with all of this depending on where you're at. If you've got a card that's close to ready, like most of your slots are full and you're almost there, then use the sequence that I send you when you comment deadline. Use that sequence to close sales and get it ordered before July 12th.
That's it. And look, this is exactly why I love this boring little business. While everybody else is out chasing AI tools and drop shipping and whatever else is trending this week, you're over here using a government program to close local businesses. It's not flashy, but it's reliable. if it isn't obvious, we are on a strict deadline now.
So, here's what I actually want you to do today, not tomorrow, but literally do it as soon as you get off of this video. First, comment deadline so I can send you the full closing sequence and scripts. Then go open up your pipeline, specifically the list of businesses you've already talked to and they're just sitting on the fence. Like they were kind of interested, but then they ghosted you. And send them the first message in that sequence.
That's your homework for today. And if you don't have a pipeline yet, then your homework is to start one. And hey, if you want to do this alongside a couple thousand other people who are selling out EDDM cards right now and making an income doing it, I've got a community with the full course attached to it. You should come join us. The link is in the description to join.
And now, if you do have a pipeline and you're planning on running this sequence, it's super important you understand how to prevent your emails from going to spam because if you're ever going to spam, your prospect will never see your messages and you'll probably never close. So, you should watch this video right here where I break down all of the steps you should take to prevent your messages from going
