Day 4 of Trying the 9x12 Postcard Method - Cold Calls All Day
Mitchell TeboJune 13, 202527:40
Hunter spends day four of trying the 9x12 postcard method cold calling local businesses he finds on Google Maps, showing how he works around gatekeepers.
Key takeaways
- Hunter set up a new client's $570 monthly payment as a recurring charge in QuickBooks, so he never has to request payment each month.
- He finds small, community-focused businesses by searching the town square on Google Maps, zooming in, and calling each non-competing business.
- Instead of leaving a message with a gatekeeper, he gets the owner's name, the receptionist's name, and the best time to call back.
- Checking a business's website, reviews, and social pages before calling shows whether it's still active and gives you rapport points.
- He plans follow-up emails two to three days after the first send and expects in-person visits to work better than phone calls.

All right, guys. Day four. Um, last night we had a good run. We got a good sale last night. $1,710.
I believe that's $570 a month. And that's set up recurring. Um, so that way I use QuickBooks and it has like a recurring feature in the payments uh section. So that way I'm not having to go out every single month and request a payment. It just happens automatically.
So we don't have to worry about that on either side. Um, and they recorded that. So that's good. But yeah, so today I've already sent the morning emails out. I've already sent the afternoon emails out um down the email list.
And then tomorrow we can roll into follow-ups for the emails that we sent out on the first day of recording or the second day of recording, whatever day it was, because that'll be two or three days with no responses. Right now, I haven't gotten any interested responses back on emails. Um, the only emails I've gotten back are people that are just not in that area, which is weird cuz Google said they were, so I don't know. Right. Um, so what I'm about to do is I'm going to roll into some calling, like some cold calling on certain businesses.
And, uh, I'm going a different way about this. So, instead of calling the ones that are already on the email list, I'm just going to I thought of this like 30 minutes ago, but I went on Google Maps. I searched up the town square for the town that I'm in. And I know that usually has like the small local businesses that I'm really trying to hit and that I'm really trying to target. Um, just cuz those are going to be a little bit smaller.
Those are going to be a little bit more community- based. So, they kind of they're they're a little bit more involved in the community, too. And I know some of them they kind of run a little bit of marketing on their own already, but not too too much. So, all I really did is I went to Google. I looked up the town square.
I zoomed in and then I can see all of the businesses and I'll show you guys what that looks like in a minute here. Um, and so all I'm going to do is I'm going to go through there. I'm going to call each one of those for industries that I haven't already like hit up or industries that aren't competing. And then you guys will get to listen in on that a little bit to kind of see uh the issues that I'm running into by calling uh kind of like what I'm saying to get in contact with the owners or with the people that run the marketing or to at least get that information and then to try to kind of figure out what they're already doing. And so yeah, so if you see anything or if you hear anything that you think I might be able to improve on um during this like calling session or whatever, uh just go ahead and put that in the comments.
I've read some of the comments from this morning's video that got put up for day three. And so he was reaching out on some different ways I could ask for contact information. So I'm going to go ahead and try some of that. I'm going to compare like what I was originally doing and compare that. So you can see both of them.
Um so yeah, we're just going to roll into it. I'm going to show you guys what it looks like on the Google Maps and how I'm doing this and I'll roll into some cold calling. All right, so here's kind of what I did is I just uh looked up Covington, Georgia Town Square. I saw this wasn't exactly where I was looking for. So, I just went to maps and then I noticed like just cuz I I'm familiar with the area.
I know this is not the specific area I was looking for. So, I just zoomed out and then I went down, zoomed right in on the middle. And then this is the area I'm looking for right here. So, you can see some of the businesses if I'm super zoomed out like this. Like, let's say right here.
Obviously, you see there's a lot of different buildings. The more you zoom in, the more you can kind of see the different businesses. And then when you click on them, the info comes up on the left side. So, that's just what I'm going to be doing. I'm going to be using this method.
I'm just going to basically go down all this and all the different areas um just around here in the local area and then yeah, we'll see how this works and then go from there. All right, we're getting ready to call the first business. I guess it's like a soap store or something. I don't know. Hold on.
Let me go to their website. Oh, yeah. Yeah. So, they do like bath bombs and like therapeutic soaps and uh let's see. Yeah, stuff like that.
Facial care, hair care, home fragrance, those different types of things. So, let's go ahead and call these guys and we'll see if anyone answers. Hello. So, I was uh just looking to chat with whoever runs your guys' community outreach if they're in today. Um she's not in today, but can I take a message for you?
I'm the manager here. I can talk to her about something, talk to the owner. Yeah. Would I just be able to get their contact information to speak directly with them? Unfortunately, not.
We don't give that out that type of information. Oh, okay. So, there's no way I would be able to get in contact with those people or whoever the owner is. She'll be here tomorrow. If you call anytime between like 10:00 a.
m. and 100 p.m., she'll be here. Okay.
You said between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Yeah.
She literally just left like literally 2 minutes ago. Oh, okay. Okay. Yeah, I'll definitely call back tomorrow then. What was your name?
Alexis. And Okay. What is the owner's name as well? Her name is Tiffany. Okay.
Thank you. No problem. Tomorrow when you call the person that will answer the phone, her name is Kendall. Kendall. All right.
Yeah. Thank you. She'll answer the phone and then you can just ask for Tiffany. Okay. Thank you very much.
No problem. You have a good one. You You too. Have a great day. Bye.
Bye. Bye. Bye. All right. Cool.
So, the owner wasn't in today, but we do know that it because it is a small business, the owner will be there tomorrow. So rather than just leaving a message, like you can't really trust or rely on people that they're going to actually pass it on. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. And even if they do, like that's not really good chance for that person to call you back. Um cuz they didn't really get to talk with you.
So like the whole goal here is to be able to control the whole situation. So if I can just get that contact information, which they weren't really willing to give that up, now I know that the owner is going to be there tomorrow. Um I have the names of the people. So when I answer the phone, I can sign a little bit more trustworthy. So, or when they answer the phone, I can.
So, tomorrow when they call, it'll be Kendall that answers. So, I'll obviously address the name when I call tomorrow, which will be on the recording as well. And then as soon as she hands the phone over to Tiffany, which is the owner, I'll be able to go ahead and address that and then use the name as well. The more that you can use somebody's name in a sales call, the more it grabs their attention and keeps them focused and it builds that personal connection like subconsciously without them really realizing it. And so, yeah, I'll just call tomorrow between 10 am and 1 pm to try to get a hold of the owner.
Uh, and now that's just going to be a follow-up for tomorrow. So, we're gonna look for another business and then go from there. All right, we got another one. This is a coffee house and study lounge. That seems pretty I think they're relatively new.
I haven't heard of them. Um, but I also haven't been there in a little over a year. So, maybe they're relatively new. I'm not too sure, but have 189 reviews on Google at 4.4 stars.
Their website is expired, so I can't really All right, whatever. We'll just call them. It says they're usually they're busier than usual right now, so I'll do the same thing. Hello, how can I help you? Hello.
I was just looking to chat with whoever runs your guys' community outreach if they're there today. I'm sorry. I was looking to chat with uh whoever runs your guys' community outreach, like your marketing and advertising if they're in today. I'm not too sure. They're not in, but I'm manager.
Okay. Would I be would you be able to give me some contact information? That way I could reach out to them or maybe just let me know a time when they're usually in that way I could just call back. Um what is it regarding? It's for a community outreach.
Um, honestly, I I don't think they'll they'll want anything with that. Okay. So, you guys aren't really like doing anything right now to kind of get the name out there and in the local community or anything. I mean, we have our own socials and stuff like that. Okay.
Thank you. I appreciate it. Of course. Byebye. No worries.
All right. So, I'll probably just call them back tomorrow because she wasn't really trying to do anything. So, yeah, we'll see. Okay, we got one here for a massage therapist. I feel like that would be pretty good.
Um I I'm guessing they're relatively new. They have exactly five stars. That's pretty good out of 27 reviews. Um let's see. Let's check their website out really quick.
The website looks pretty good. It looks pretty updated. They have a Facebook page. We'll go ahead and check that out. They're pretty revalent on the Facebook page.
Well, actually, no. They haven't posted in a while. Haven't posted since May of 2023 on Mother's Day. So, I don't know. Maybe they do some marketing.
Maybe not. We'll just go ahead and call them and find out. That's really the only way to to know. So, let's go ahead and see what they got to say. 678.
Your call has been forwarded to voicemail. The person you're trying to reach is not available at the tone. So, I'm going to assume that since they haven't posted in a while, they're probably not open anymore. Actually, let's All right, so we got that phone number. Let's check on the Facebook page and see if there's a different phone number.
No. Um, let's check their Instagram out. Maybe they're more active there. Let's see. Same thing.
So, I'm assuming these people closed down in 2023, which is weird because they had really good reviews. So, I I don't really know. All right. Whatever. We'll uh move on.
We'll take them off the list because we can't even call those guys. So, find a new one. All right. We have one. Uh this actually looks pretty promising.
It's a Italian restaurant. 12 reviews, 4.8 stars. It looks a little more high scale, which is something that we we really want to target is like the high scale areas. There's no reason to be targeting like a super cheap restaurant.
That's not going to really give people a great experience. Like obviously they can have good food and stuff like that, a good environment, but the entire experience overall isn't going to be too great. Or if you have a more upscale place like this, I mean, I'm just looking at the pictures here. It looks like it's an Italian restaurant, but all the chairs look super comfortable. It's a super like bright.
It's got a lot of natural light in there. Um, it looks like just going there would be super good vibes somewhere where some somebody would want to like sit down for a while, maybe come back multiple times. The food looks really good. Uh, yeah, the aesthetics of this place is just amazing. So, I feel like this would be a good um a good little Italian restaurant to be able to give them a call.
Um, actually, no. It says they're closed. They open at 4 p.m. So, I'm not even going to call right now.
And they don't even have a phone number listed. That's weird. Uh, let me see. Ah, dang. They don't have a website.
They don't have a phone number. No email. Nothing. I guess. Let's see.
Let me go back to these pictures and I'll see. They got some pictures of their menus. So, I'll see if their phone number is on there at all. And then maybe we might be able to see something. I'm not too sure.
I definitely want to get in contact with this place. So, if not, then I'll try to find another way to see if I can look them up on Facebook or Instagram or something. um a little bit later. I'll just write their stuff down so that way I can call them back at 4. Yeah.
No, so I can't find any contact info on this one. I'm definitely going to do everything I can to find that and then around 400 p.m. I'll go ahead and I'll call them and then I'll record that for you guys. All right, we got a photography business.
It looks like it's two people running the show um just based off the name and then 30 reviews, five stars. So, they obviously do really, really good, which is what we want. Um, they're open. Let's check their website really quick. Website actually looks really, really good.
This is probably the best one that we've seen today. Their pictures look good. They do a lot of weddings, a lot of like I guess honeymoon stuff or just random dates. I think this will definitely be a good company to get in contact with or a good business. So, actually, let's see if I can find their name because if it's only two people and I can answer or they answer the phone and I can go ahead and use their name right off the get-go, it might be a little better.
Oh, so they actually have This is pretty interesting. They have like a get to know me page. I don't know why that has anything to do with what I'm doing, but at least Okay, I'm trying to look at this. Okay, go-to food is Mexican. Um, dream destination is Scotland.
first job. I can't really read this writing or like this type of font. It's really hard. Maybe you guys can. This is actually This is pretty good though because it allows me to build a little bit of rapport before they even before the conversation even starts.
So, with sales, like you want to have a good rapport. So, if I can find something in common with this person when I get on the phone with them, it builds a little bit of a level of trust and kind of lets their guard down. So, I kind of like this. I've never seen a uh person do this on their website. Usually they have like a little paragraph about them, but she has like an entire page.
She has a little thing. It's like a this or that. Here, I'll actually show it to you. Um, so this is actually kind of cool. Let's see.
So this or that fun fact. So whatever that I can't really read that if you can read that maybe. I see I know this Mexican. This is Scotland over here. Um, I've been to Europe, so I might be able to do some stuff with that.
My favorite food is Mexican as well. So I'll be able to build some type of report off that. Uh, coffee. Let's see. Pizza.
a summer night out. Um, yeah, this pretty cool. So, I'll use this to build some rapport on the phone call and then we'll get in contact. We got her name. I don't know if this is I don't know which one this is though, like which person.
So, Abby, that's her name. I'm trying to figure out. So, I see another name up here, but I'm just going to assume that she's the only one. Cool. Let's go ahead and we'll contact these people.
telephone number 404. All right, so they didn't answer. I'm just going to call back at a later time. They're probably busier. They're probably in the middle of a shoot or I'll reach out to them on one of their social media channels.
It looks like they're pretty active on everything. So, they're on Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok, Pinterest. Um, so before I call them back, obviously, I'm going to go through I'm going to look at some of their stuff, uh, some of their pictures, some of the events they do. That way, I can kind of like sweet talk them a little bit. I want to get on the phone call.
Dave, if you can sweet talk them, you can get you can close any deal. Um, so I see they're super religious, too. Yeah. So, I'm going to learn as much as I can about this when I call them and kind of build up some of that rapport in the very beginning of the call. Uh, that way they let their guard down.
It just makes it a lot easier to get the sale done. Um, and this is just a photography business. So, yeah. Actually, I think I might know this person, believe it or not, now that I'm looking at the picture or it's like a family friend or something. I don't know.
I don't know. Whatever. We'll figure it out. So, yeah. All right, so back to that photography one.
I knew the person looked familiar. Um, I don't know if that part made it in the in the video or not, but so I just looked their Facebook page up and we have a lot of mutual friends and uh a lot of my cousins are friends with those persons. So that's really good. Um, if we have mutual friends, that builds some trust up right there. So I don't know.
I feel like that that'll uh do really really good. Or maybe not. Who knows? They might not care anything about marketing, but we'll find out. We'll get in contact with them.
Um, if not, I'll call my cousin because she owns a salon and then I'll get her on the card and then she can reach out to this person. Uh, so, and plus, they're on the same street, so that's pretty good, too. So, yeah, I'll update you guys whenever I call them back. All right, we got another one here. It's an escape room.
I feel like this would be really, really good at something fun. Um, people typically spend a lot of money in an escape room just because they're either going on a date or they're doing like a a family or a friend like event or function or whatever. So, there's a lot of people spending money at once and they would have really good options for promos. Again, they're closed, so that sucks. So, I'll have to call them after 4:30.
I'll write their info down to call back. But, they have good reviews. Um, they've been around for a little while. I remember seeing them when they first opened up. out in the area.
So, yeah, we'll call them back at 4:30 and then go from there. Your sister's closet. This is Katie. How can I help you? Hello.
I was just looking to chat with whoever runs your guys' community outreach for the local community. Um, I don't I mean, we're a consignment store. I'm not really sure she does any community outreach. Oh, so you guys don't do like any marketing or advertising or anything like that? Uh, she does like the Cington paper or something.
I'm not sure. The best day to call would be Monday. Um, because the owner works Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and then I work the rest of the week. And I don't I'm a manager, but I don't have anything to do with any of that mess. Okay.
Um, yeah. If you you call back and her name's Elizabeth. You said Elizabeth. Uhhuh. Okay.
Is there a way I'd be able to get like maybe an email or a phone number just to contact her directly? Just this one. Yeah, just this way. Okay. Okay.
So, just call back Monday. Is there like a specific time that would work good? Um, we don't open till 1 on Monday. So, anytime between I would say 1:30 and 6. Okay.
Okay. Well, thank you for your time. Oh, sure. No problem. Have a great day.
All right. You, too, dear. Bye. All right. So, that was a little consignment store.
I mean, I don't really know. That might not be a good business, but we'll see. Anything counts, you know. Um, so we'll call them back on Monday or might not even call them back to be honest. Um, if we get some other industries in here, I don't know if I really want a consignment store or not.
I didn't really know it was a consignment store. based off the Google information. Uh but yeah, we'll give him a call back if we don't get anything else filled up. So, all right, we got a flower shop. Um this was suggested by one of the people in the community that flower shops are pretty good.
I guess, dude, if they're uh if they've had success with flower shops, then I'll call them. Let's see. They seem to be doing pretty good. Five stars. They don't have a whole lot of reviews.
only nine reviews on Google, so I'm assuming they're fairly new. Um, which is kind of the kind of the people we're looking for. Not really. Um, but we'll give them a call and we'll see what they have to say. Hey, Amanda.
Hello. I was uh looking to get in contact with whoever runs your guys' community outreach. What's it regarding? Um, it's kind of like a local postcard that we're doing that features a lot of different local businesses inside the square and other businesses around Covington. And we're just going to be mailing that out to about 5,000 different houses.
I'm not interested. Thanks. Okay. Thank you. All right.
So, there you go. There's an objection or not really an objection, but somebody who's not interested. Super quick, super fast. Um, you're going to get that all day long and then you just move on to the next one. There's another flower shop down the street, so I'll probably hit them up, too.
Um, and they've been around for a while. So, let's see. Okay, here's a a bakery. This has actually been around for a long time. They do really, really good.
They have almost a thousand reviews at four and a half stars. Um, I know they're super popular. Everybody knows about these guys. Um, they're always busy. Every time I'm home, they're busy.
Doesn't matter what time of year it is, what time of day it is, they always got people lined up outside. So, uh, I don't even know if they're doing any marketing, but we'll see. We'll try them out. I don't even know who owns this. I could probably find it off.
I just ask around like family members and stuff. They might know. I know they have some other locations. I'm not too far away. Hello, this is Hello.
I was looking to get in contact with whoever runs your guys' community outreach like the catering. No, maybe like um the owner or if you guys have like an advertising and marketing director or something like that. We don't. And the owner is on vacation this week. Okay.
Do you know when the owner would be back or even if I could just get an email and I could shoot them an email? Um I don't have I know he'll be back this Monday and the email might be but I have Okay. So you think it should be it would probably be best just to call back Monday then? Yes. Who's calling?
Uh this is Hunter Stevenson. And you're calling for like community out where you like sponsoring stuff like that. Um yeah, kind. So we're doing like a a local postcard that's going to be featuring a lot of the businesses inside of the square and like other areas around the square. Um and we're going to be sending that out to 5,000 homes in the community just to kind of like bring in some more customers and stuff.
Okay. Um, yeah. I would call special on Monday and that should be the best time to call probably from 8 to like 10. That's usually when he's here. Okay.
And what's his name? Zack Johnson. You said Zack Johnson. Yep. Okay, perfect.
I'll give a call back on Monday then. Thank you. Have a good day. You as well. Thank you.
All right, cool. So, uh, Zach Johnson, I know they do a lot of stuff in the community, so I think that should be pretty easy. Um, I'll ask around, too, to see if I know anybody that knows him and I can kind of leverage that a little bit if I do. Um, if you have mutual connections with any of these business owners, if it's like a local community that you grew up in, and you can like mention somebody's name that they would know that you're either related to them or you grew up with them, that like automatically builds insane amounts of rapport. Uh, so let's see.
A lot of these people are just super busy. Let's see. Here's a deli. I don't know how I want to do that. I'm kind of looking for more uh like service base.
Oh, barber shop. I wonder if that would be good. Let's see. What kind of reviews do they have? 70 reviews seems pretty good.
I only have one. Oh, actually, no. They got a few pictures. If I find something else uh good and I get some good um phone calls, then I'll start recording again. But for the most part, yeah, that's how most what you guys are seeing now is pretty much how most of the calls go all day long.
And then usually like towards the end of the day or whatever, you might get that one call that's going to be interested. So, I mean, I would say one out of 10 businesses you call are going to be interested and one out of five of those interested businesses are actually going to be like a close. So, for some numbers, I mean, there you go. You're going to call, let's say, 50 people before you get um one deal really. And that's just pretty much with a lot of different things in sales.
It's all just a numbers game. So, yeah. Um if I get anything good, I'll call you guys back or not call you guys back. My bad. I'll uh start recording again so you guys can watch it.
All right. So, I'm looking more into that Italian restaurant from earlier and I found a social media that they're relatively active on, but again, all it has is the address and there's no phone numbers or anything. They posted 18 hours ago, so they're definitely active. I did get an email for events, so I'll probably message um that person. I'm I would have to guess that's the owner.
Um or just somebody who handles like marketing or or at least they would know who handles everything. Um now their Instagram page actually looks really good. I think they're still pretty new. Oh yeah, they just started this year. Actually, they started in April.
So they're definitely new. This might be someone who wants to hop on some advertising in the local community. So we're definitely going to reach out to these people. I'll send them an email right now actually so I don't forget. All right, we're back at the office.
Before we left the base, we went ahead and we sent out that last string of emails for the day. Uh, we still haven't gotten any responses at all from the emails other than people just saying that they weren't even in the area. So, no, no emails of people being interested, nobody asking questions, nobody saying they weren't interested. It was just literally I'm not in that area. So, that's that's the only thing we're dealing with on the email side.
Uh, so I know a lot of guys, they get really good luck with the emails and they're like selling out within like a week. Um, right now the emails not looking so hot for me. So, I'm assuming that I'm doing it wrong. So, I'm going to do some more research to see um if there's maybe a step that I missed or something and then reattack that tomorrow. Uh but for now, I just finished up calling some of those businesses that opened later in the day, like around 4:00 4:30.
Not a single one answered, which was super super weird. Um it just rang and ring and rang. I recorded it, but there's no point you guys watching the phone just ring for 30 minutes. So, if somebody answers and it would make sense to add it into the video, but I mean I didn't even get an answer. So, uh that's just going to save you guys a lot of time watching absolutely nothing.
Uh we did get one answer. It was a garage door repair. Um and it was another one that I just found like probably 15 minutes ago. I called them. Uh as soon as I said something about connecting with whoever does their community outreach, they just hung up the phone.
Didn't even say anything. It is a veteranowned business, or at least it says it is on Google. So, tomorrow I'll probably I'm going to call back and I'll say something along the lines of me being a local veteran business owner just wanting to connect with other veteran business owners to ask questions or whatever it is. Um, maybe I can get them to stay on the phone that way. I don't know.
We'll see. I'll record that and then you guys can watch it. Uh, whether it works or it doesn't work, who knows, right? But you you'll kind of see what I say. You'll see how these people are reacting.
So, yeah, that's really all I have. There's not really a whole lot left for me to record today. It's really just going to be me watching more videos on building the email list um from a few different channels to try to see if there's something I miss or see if there's another way that I can try cuz it obviously is not working out for me. Um I'm really just doing the call. I think honestly I think actually showing up in person is going to be the best option and obviously I can't do that right now because I'm in a completely different state but in about two weeks I will be able to do that.
So once I get home in 2 weeks, I'll definitely be recording some more content for you guys to be able to see me going into these businesses. So yeah, other than that, I mean, I'm going to call it saying that's it for the day, at least for filming. I'm still going to go work on some stuff, but there's really nothing else for me to record today. We got the calls today. You guys got to see some of the fails.
At the end of the day, I think it's still I'm not going to call this as a loss for the day. I'm going to call this as a as a win because we did get more emails sent out. Um, we did get through a whole area, like a whole section of the a city. So, we know that uh these people either aren't interested or we have call back times for when the owner will be there so we can actually talk to the owners. So, that's still a win for the day in my opinion.
